PA setup basics for small live shows
The first time you run sound for a small show, the hard part usually isn't knowing the gear — it's knowing what to plug in first and how to actually make it sound good. This guide assumes a room of roughly 50 to 100 people and walks through the whole flow: how to think about signal, the order you connect and power things, gain structure, building monitors, fighting feedback, and running a soundcheck that fits in your timeslot. Picture the signal flow first
Everything in PA gets easier once you can trace the path of the audio as a single line. It generally goes like this, and when this is fuzzy you can't troubleshoot:
- Sources — vocal mics, DIs for bass and guitar, line outputs from keyboards
- Stage box / snake carries them all back to the console
- Mixer (console) sets the level and tone of each channel
- Power amp (built in, if you use powered speakers) boosts the signal
- Main speakers face the audience; monitors face the band
Analog or digital, the order "input → processing → output" never changes. When something is silent or wrong, follow the line from the top and you'll find the break.
Connection order and gain structure
When you power up, order matters. The rule is: power on from the top of the chain down, and power off from the bottom up. Turn on the console and outboard first and the power amps or powered speakers last; when shutting down, kill the speakers first and the console last. Get this backwards and you'll send a loud pop through the rig that can damage gear and ears.
Once it's all patched, set your gain structure. Getting each channel's input gain (trim / head amp) right is the foundation of a clean, feedback-resistant sound. The routine is simple:
- Start with channel faders and the master pulled down
- Have the performer sing or play at real performance volume
- Raise only the gain knob until the meter sits around 0 VU on average, just shy of clipping on peaks
- Touch EQ and faders only after the gain is set
Too little gain and you have to push the fader into the noise floor; too much and the signal distorts and feeds back more easily. Set channels on a digital mixer, and confirm whether each input needs phantom power at this stage.
Building the monitor mix
Monitors are how performers hear themselves and the band. Build them on a separate send (AUX or mix bus), not by dumping the main mix onto the stage.
- Ask each performer what they most need to hear — vocalists want their own voice, drummers often want bass or a click
- Send the AUX to the wedge (a monitor wedge) and bring up only the parts they asked for
- Resist the urge to make "everything louder" — that swells the stage volume and invites feedback. Send only what's needed
- In-ear monitors (in-ear monitors) cut stage spill and feedback compared with floor wedges
Monitors set the overall stage volume too. If the wedges are too loud, the whole stage gets noisy and the house mix turns muddy. Aim for the quietest level that still works and everything tightens up.
What causes feedback, and how to tame it
Feedback is a loop: sound leaves a speaker, a mic picks it up, it gets amplified, and around it goes — ringing out at one frequency as a squeal or a low howl. The usual culprits are mic-to-speaker placement, too much gain, and one frequency standing out. Work through it in this order:
- Fix placement: don't aim a mic at a speaker. Point the null of a directional mic (a cardioid dynamic mic, for example) toward the wedge
- Don't chase volume: stop at "enough." Over-loud monitors are the most common trigger
- EQ out the offending band: push level up to just before it rings, then dip that frequency on a graphic EQ — this is "ringing out"
- Mute what you're not using: don't leave open channels live
If it howls mid-show, pull the offending channel or monitor fader down fast to stop it, then diagnose. That's quicker than yanking the whole mix down.
Running the soundcheck
With limited time, having a fixed order keeps you from getting lost. The usual approach is to start with the rhythm section.
- Drums (kick, snare, toms, cymbals, then the whole kit) to lay the rhythmic foundation
- Add bass and sort out the low-end overlap with the kick
- Bring in guitars and keys to build the full band image
- Vocals last — aim for the voice sitting out front so the words are clear
- Check the monitor sends alongside each instrument as you go
Always finish with a full song from the whole band: parts that sounded fine alone can mask each other once they play together. If you also want to log the rehearsal or capture a recording, studio gear like an audio interface comes in handy.
Draw it out before the day
