Keyboards vs synthesizers: types and how to choose

Browse any music store and you'll see rows of near-identical-looking instruments labeled "digital piano," "synthesizer," "MIDI keyboard," or just "keyboard" — and it's genuinely hard to tell what sets them apart. The trick is to sort them not by what they sound like, but by how they make sound and what job they're built for. This guide walks through the main types of keyboard instruments, explains how they actually differ, and helps you pick the right one for your goal. Sorting out the word "keyboard"

Let's untangle the terminology first. Strictly speaking, "keyboard" is the umbrella term for all keyboard instruments. Pianos, organs and synthesizers are all keyboards in the broad sense — when a band lists a "keyboard player," this is the meaning intended.

In stores, however, "keyboard" often means something much narrower: a portable electronic keyboard, the kind with built-in speakers and auto-accompaniment. That double meaning is where the confusion starts. In this article we'll use "keyboard" in the broad sense, and look at digital pianos, synthesizers, MIDI keyboards and organs as types within it. Two questions do most of the sorting:

  • How is the sound made? Acoustically, with strings or pipes — or electronically, with circuits and digital processing.
  • What is its job? A substitute for a piano, an instrument for creating sounds, or a device that sends performance data to a computer.

Acoustic and digital pianos: key touch and 88 keys

A grand piano or an upright piano is an acoustic instrument: press a key and a hammer strikes a string. It has 88 keys, the volume and character respond to how firmly you play, and the weight of the hammers gives the keys their distinctive resistance under your fingers.

A digital piano recreates that sound and feel digitally. When choosing one, two things matter most:

  • Key touch (hammer action): a mechanism that reproduces the weighted feel of a real piano. For piano practice, the standard advice is to choose hammer-action keys rather than light, springy ones.
  • Whether it has 88 keys: for serious piano repertoire, 88 keys is the baseline. Compact 73- or 76-key models exist, but for classical practice a full 88 is the safe choice.

Digital pianos let you adjust volume, practice on headphones, and never need tuning — which is why they're the go-to "piano substitute" for anyone who can't fit an acoustic instrument at home. Stage pianos are the same family, streamlined for gigging. One relative worth knowing: the vintage electric piano works by striking metal tines with hammers and amplifying the result electrically — a different beast from digital pianos, and its sweet, mellow tone remains a beloved staple sound to this day.

Synthesizers: instruments that create sound

A synthesizer isn't built to imitate a piano — it's an instrument that synthesizes sound itself, from scratch. Simplified a great deal, the sound is shaped in three stages:

  • Oscillator: generates the raw waveform (sawtooth, square and so on) that the sound is built from, and sets its pitch.
  • Filter: carves frequencies out of that waveform to change the tone — this is where "muffled" becomes "bright."
  • Amplifier and envelope: shape how the volume changes over time, giving the sound its character — a sharp pluck that fades quickly, or a pad that swells in softly.

All those knobs and sliders exist so you can grab these parameters directly and sculpt the sound. A modular synth, where you patch circuits together with cables, is this same structure laid completely bare. Synths also keep interesting company: the vocoder processes your voice through instrument tones, the sampler plays recorded audio from the keys, and the drum machine handles programmed rhythm. And for players who want to roam the stage, the keytar — a synth worn on a shoulder strap — is a genre of its own.

MIDI keyboards: controllers with no sound of their own

A MIDI keyboard looks exactly like an instrument, but it makes no sound by itself. Press a key and it sends performance data — which key, how hard, for how long — as MIDI to a computer or phone, where a software instrument inside your DAW (music production software) turns it into sound. It's less an instrument than an input device: a controller.

  • The central input device for music production: recording melodies and chords into a DAW by playing them is far faster and more musical than clicking notes in with a mouse.
  • The sounds live in the software: piano, strings, synths — the tone depends entirely on the virtual instruments on your computer, so one keyboard gives you access to a virtually unlimited palette. Many models add pads for programming drums, plus assignable knobs.
  • Affordable and compact: with no sound engine on board, they're light and inexpensive, from 25-key minis up to full 88-key models.

"I bought what I thought was a synthesizer and no sound came out" is a classic beginner mishap. Before buying, always check whether the instrument produces sound on its own.

Organs and other keyboard instruments

The organ predates the piano by centuries. Pipe organs make sound by pushing air through pipes, and electric descendants such as the Hammond organ carry the idea into electronics. The big difference from a piano: as long as you hold a key, the note sustains without dying away. Classic electric organs also shape their tone by blending harmonics with sliders called drawbars, giving them an unmistakable presence in jazz, rock and gospel.

Beyond these, the keyboard family includes accordions, melodicas, harpsichords and more. What they share is only the interface — keys under your fingers — while the ways they produce sound vary enormously. That variety is exactly what makes keyboard instruments so interesting.

Choosing by goal: practice, bands and music production

Once the types are clear, choosing is simple: work backwards from what you want to do.

  • Practicing piano: an 88-key digital piano with hammer action. Prioritize the touch, and moving to an acoustic piano later will feel natural.
  • Playing keys in a band: a stage piano or synthesizer that switches between piano, electric piano and organ sounds is the standard pick. If you'll carry it to gigs, check the weight too.
  • Making music on a computer: a MIDI keyboard plus a DAW is the shortest route. Add an audio interface and studio monitors and your home setup is complete.
  • Sound design for its own sake: a synthesizer with hands-on knobs. Start with a beginner-friendly model full of presets, and descend into the modular rabbit hole once you're hooked.
