How to order guitar effects pedals

The order you plug your pedals in has a huge effect on your tone. Swap two pedals around and the character of your distortion, the clarity of your notes and the overall feel can change completely. That makes the signal chain one of the foundations of your sound. This guide walks through how the signal flows and the classic order most players use, explaining the reasoning behind each step. Understand how the signal flows

The most important thing to grasp is that your signal travels in one direction: guitar → pedals → amp. Each pedal takes whatever arrives at its input, processes it, and passes the result out to the next box in line. So the sound shaped by an earlier pedal feeds directly into the next one. That is exactly why adding chorus to a distorted tone sounds nothing like distorting a chorused tone — the order changes what each effect is actually working on.

When you plan a chain, picture the final sound that reaches your amp. Start with the clean signal from your electric guitar and decide what you want to add, and in what order.

The classic pedal order

Most guitarists follow roughly this sequence. It moves from "tidying the signal" to "shaping the tone" to "adding space".

  • 1. Tuner — first in the chain, so it reads a clean, stable signal for accurate tuning.
  • 2. Wah / Compressor — placed before distortion so they react to your picking dynamics and filter sweep while the signal still has its full range.
  • 3. Drive (overdrive / distortion / fuzz) — the heart of your tone. This sets the core character before the signal hits the amp.
  • 4. Modulation (chorus / phaser / flanger) — adds movement and swirl to the now thicker, driven sound.
  • 5. Delay / Reverb (time-based) — placed last to spread the finished tone out into space and add the tail.

Why this order works

The logic is simple: whatever you apply first gets processed by everything after it. Putting drive before time-based effects matters because if you distort the repeats of a delay, the sound smears together and loses definition. With drive first and delay after, each driven note repeats cleanly and keeps its edge.

  • Compressor and wah before drive: a distorted signal is already squashed with little dynamic range, so these effects — which feed on picking dynamics — barely register after it. They work best on the lively signal before the gain stage.
  • Modulation after drive: swirl applied before distortion tends to get crushed by the gain. Adding movement to an already driven tone makes the effect far more noticeable.
  • Time-based effects last: echoes and reverb belong on a "finished" sound. Placed earlier, the tail itself gets reprocessed and turns muddy.

This is only a starting point. Plenty of players break the rules on purpose — putting a wah before a fuzz, or a delay in front of the drive — to find a signature sound. Once you know why the standard works, you are free to subvert it.

The amp effects loop (where time-based effects go)

If you get your distortion from the amp itself rather than a pedal, the placement of delay and reverb needs extra thought. Run them into the amp's front input and the reverb is added before the amp distorts it, so you end up distorting the reverb tail as well — exactly the smearing you want to avoid.

The fix is the send/return jacks (the effects loop). The loop taps the signal inside the amp after the preamp has done its distortion but before the power section, sends it out (SEND) through your time-based pedals, and returns it (RETURN). That way the delay and reverb sit cleanly on top of the distorted tone. If you drive everything with pedals, just chain them all in front of the amp; if you rely on amp distortion, look into using the loop.

Power supply and patch cables
