Mixing console basics: controls and signal flow

The mixing console is everywhere sound happens: live venues, school halls, streaming setups. That wall of knobs and faders looks intimidating, but there's a secret — a mixer is mostly the same channel repeated side by side. Understand the path of one signal from top to bottom, and you can read the whole desk. This guide walks first-time console users through the parts of an analog mixer in the order the sound actually travels. What a mixer does: combine, shape, and distribute

A mixer's job is simple to state: take in multiple sounds, adjust the level and tone of each, blend them, and send the result wherever it needs to go. Physically, the desk breaks down into three blocks: the inputs where mics and instruments connect, the channel strips that process each source, and the master section that sums everything and feeds the outputs.

  • Input stage: where you plug in a mic or instrument and set its reference level.
  • Channel strip: one vertical column of knobs and a fader. One microphone, one channel is the basic rule.
  • Master section: the final stage that sums all channels and sends the mix to speakers or a recorder.

Sound flows down each channel from top to bottom, then collects at the master section on the right. That path is called the signal flow, and keeping it in mind is what stops you from getting lost.

The input stage: gain (trim), XLR and phone inputs, phantom power

At the top of each channel you make the connection and set the input level. Microphones typically connect with an XLR cable, while line-level gear such as keyboards uses a phone plug. A microphone's signal is tiny, so the gain knob (labeled trim on some desks) at the top of the strip sets how much the built-in mic preamp amplifies it.

  • Gain is a reference setting, not a volume knob: have the performer sing or play at their loudest, then raise the gain until just below the point where the peak light flashes. Too low and noise creeps in; too high and the sound distorts.
  • Mic level versus line level: a microphone's faint signal and an electronic instrument's much stronger line signal are very different in strength. Matching the right input jack and gain range to the source is step one.
  • Phantom power (+48V): a condenser microphone needs power to operate, supplied as +48V through the XLR cable when you engage the mixer's phantom power switch. Pull the fader down before switching it on or off to avoid a loud pop. Dynamic microphones need no power at all.

Down the channel strip: EQ, pan and the fader

After the gain stage, the signal is shaped as it travels down the strip. The typical order is gain, then EQ, then aux sends, then pan, then the fader.

  • EQ (equalizer): HI, MID and LOW knobs boost or cut each frequency band — clearing up a muddy vocal, or trimming low-end rumble. A practical habit is to cut what you don't need before boosting anything. Many desks also have a low-cut (high-pass) switch to remove low-frequency noise.
  • Pan: places the sound left or right in the stereo image. In live PA work most sources stay centered; pan earns its keep when spreading stereo instruments across the field.
  • Fader: decides how much of that channel goes into the mix. Keep the division of labor clear — gain sets the reference, the fader sets the balance — and your mixes stay predictable. The position marked 0 (or U, for unity) means no boost and no cut.
  • Mute and PFL (solo): mute channels you aren't using, and use the PFL/SOLO button to hear a single channel in your headphones — also the standard way to watch the meter while setting gain.

Aux sends and stage monitors: a separate mix for the performers

Partway down the strip sit the aux (auxiliary) sends, knobs that split off a copy of the signal to a different output. Their classic job is the stage monitor mix: separate from what the audience hears, you build a balance the performers can sing to and send it to wedge monitors or in-ear monitors.

  • Pre-fader versus post-fader: monitor sends are normally pre-fader, meaning they ignore the channel fader — you can ride the house volume without changing what the performers hear. Sends feeding effects like reverb work better post-fader, so the effect follows the fader.
  • Aux masters: each aux bus has its own master knob that scales the combined send level from all channels.

"The house mix and the monitor mix are two different mixes" is one of the most important ideas in all of live sound.

The master section and outputs: the last leg to the speakers

Everything ends up in the master section on the right of the desk. The main fader (usually a single stereo fader) sets the overall level, and the main outputs feed powered speakers with built-in amplifiers, or passive speakers via a power amp.

  • Level meters: show the strength of the summed signal. If the red segments light constantly, revisit the channel gains and faders rather than just pulling the master down.
  • Other outputs: many desks add a REC OUT for recording or streaming, a PHONES output for checking the mix, and outputs for additional speakers.
  • Power-up order: switch on the mixer first, then the speakers; power down in reverse, speakers first. This protects the speakers from turn-on and turn-off pops.

Keeping feedback under control

That painful squeal — feedback (howling) — happens when a microphone picks up the sound coming out of the speakers and the loop feeds on itself. Once you know the mechanism, a few basics prevent most of it.

  • Placement comes first: keep the main speakers in front of the microphones (on the audience side), and never point a mic at a speaker. This alone removes most of the risk.
  • Don't leave unused mics open: mute or pull down channels that aren't in use. Every open microphone adds to the feedback risk.
  • Keep gain to the minimum: ask performers to work close to the mic. The closer the source, the less amplification you need.
  • Notch the ringing frequency: if it still rings, the standard fix is a narrow cut at the offending frequency using the channel EQ or a graphic EQ.

Analog versus digital, wrap-up and icon assets

Everything above describes an analog mixer, but digital mixers are now common too. A digital desk builds in effects and compressors, stores complete setups as recallable "scenes," and often supports tablet control. The analog desk's strength is the opposite: every control is visible at once, and the signal flow is laid out physically on the surface, which also makes it the best teaching tool for how mixers work. Under a digital desk's screens, the path is still the same gain, EQ, aux, fader chain, so everything you've learned here transfers directly.
